Supercarrier USS Abraham Lincoln CVN 72 was one of four navy ships that thousands of people visited, standing in line for hours in the heat to get aboard. We were two of them. (This is an older video but we wanted you to see what the ship looks like.) Perhaps the event planners didn't expect such a huge patriotic turnout. We were sun burned and dehydrated by the time we got home.
It was a historical event, the first time any navy ships have docked in San Pedro, Port of Los Angeles in many years. This ship usually goes between San Diego and Washington state. It was all part of LA NAVY WEEK.

USS INDEPENDENCE - A REMARKABLE NEW SHIP READY TO LAUCH FROM SAN DIEGO

"There is no wheel for steering, and no props. Giant water jet engines propel the craft, while it is controlled through joysticks at the helm. The Commander's conn is an elevated chair with a keyboard and flat-screen panel full of information, from the 42 cameras mounted on board, to engine, weapons control--and email.A ship of this size, more than 400 feet in length, would normally be manned by up to 300 sailors. The Independence is manned by a rotating crew of 40 sailors."
