OUR PILE OF CHEAP BROKEN CHINESE CRAP - IN THE LANDFILL FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS
We're tempted to start piling up all the cheap broken Chinese crap we've bought, take a photo of it, and then set it on fire.
But we won't.
Sufficient to say, we too, though we try NOT to, have bought cheap things that are made in China, even from American based companies and other European countries that import manufactured goods from China. Sometimes you have to look at the packaging real hard to find out that some or all of the product was made in China. For instance we've found notations that something was made in China of American made parts. Or something was made in the United States from China-made parts. Or something was made in the United States but one part of it - say the lids of a pot - were imported from China.
But whatever it is, the Chinese-made part or the Chinese-made whole, it breaks or falls apart quickly.
And belongs on our pile, for photographing, and setting on fire.
We won't set the stuff on fire. We won't even make a pile. WHY NOT?
Because we DO CARE ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT which means that we put everything we can in the proper recycling bins. We take batteries to a drop off at the library. We wait for special events to turn in light bulbs, nail polish, small electronics, etc. So no smoking toxic fires for us or our neighbors to breath. And no clutter waiting in the basement.
BUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU BUY SOMETHING THAT LASTS ONE USE OF A FEW WEEKS and you throw it into the recycling bin? At best it gets segregated out and is possibly sold to those who can use some or all of it's parts or remake the plastics and metals. (In our neighborhood old TV sets are often broken into and smashed before the garbage pick up comes.)
THE REST GOES INTO LANDFILLS where it can take hundreds of years for the buried items to turn into something resembling dust. This is true of newspapers. This is true of hot dogs. This is particularly true of PLASTICS. So when you buy crap, it also costs us all in garbage related fees.
SOME THINGS WE BOUGHT, made in CHINA, that broke fast.
A plunger. It had a sturdy wood turned handle and we couldn't imagine that the rubbery head of it would break after the second use. (We're trying to find a garden use for the handle.)
Hair clips - the kind with a spring and teeth - to keep hair back when swimming. The set of 12 broke the teeth easily. We got about 2 uses for each clip before it broke. So badly made actually using them broke them.
Umbrellas. We lost our $40 at purchase, heavy duty old fashioned American made umbrella. So after having a few break after one good wind or rain that we had purchased for under $5, we bought $1 ones that did the same. We're trying to figure out a way to reuse the fabric.

WE WERE SHOCKED WHEN OUR NEIGHBOR ASKED US WHY WE FLY THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES

We don't have a flagpole but we do fly a small American Flag by our front door most every day. We bring it in when it's pouring down rain or the winds are brisk enough to bring down palm tree fronds.
One day a friend of ours blurted out , "WHY DO YOU FLY THE FLAG?"
We said, "Because we love our country!"
We were shocked that our friend didn't understand this intuitively. All he said was, "You do?"
It wasn't a challenge to our patriotism.
Truth be known, we're not blind to the fact that our country has problems. Rape in the military has had us very upset. We think that's terrible. Still, we're glad that our country endures and has processes for discussing and working out issues and that our country is flexible enough to change, so long as it never changes into another country, or a country that no longer could be called the United States.
Remember to only buy flags that are MADE IN THE USA!

SUMMER - PROSPERITY - A TIME FOR GIVING THINGS AWAY!
This morning we heard the news that Americans are not saving enough money.
USA TODAY - AMERICANS WITHOUT EMERGENCY SAVINGS
First, no we have not given up on buying as much as possible that's manufactured and sold right here in the United States but we are like most of you in that we have to be careful about what we buy.
One of the reasons we want American products is that they are usually well made to last. We wish we could have back all the money we spent on cheap stuff - especially things made in China - that we have now put in our trash dumps for eternity.
One of the ways that we can SAVE MONEY is to make important purchases in a studied manner, to read up on products and manufacturers, and to buy things that last. We did a lot of that for you when we first started blogging, and now we just hope to inspire you to do the same.
Another way we can SAVE MONEY is by using things we buy. We don't want to buy things we don't really need or don't really use.
Another way to save money is to GIVE THINGS AWAY!
Most people do this when they've had a garage sale and what ever is left over they donate! And they sometimes want a tax deduction. We say, forget the tax deduction and get your credits elsewhere!
We'd like to suggest that this summer, while you have the windows open and are cleaning the house that you start to make piles of things to give away because there is some sort of GOOD KARMA about it.
We're not trying to be hokey here!
Let's give you an example from our own recent experience:
After we got the new refrigerator we were inspired to do a good job of cleaning the kitchen.
We found we had a couple bags of food products still good to eat that we had bought and just had not used or that we didn't think we would by the time they were expired.
We dropped off two bags of the miscellaneous food stuffs to a homeless shelter.
Then we went through our closets. We think that if you haven't lost weight or gained it and so you haven't worn something for a couple years it's time to give it away unless it's something very expensive or very classic like a good coat and then we'd give it a few more years. So we did the same as we did with the food, we gave the clothes away, this time to a local hospital that happens to have a "thrift shop" inside it with a ongoing sale of used items to benefit the hospital.
NOW WE WERE REALLY MOVING THE ENERGY.
We put some items that were just cluttering our place up for sale on Craig's List but this proved to be a horrible experience. We seemed to attract no-shows, goof balls, and worse, a person who was verbally abusive and possibly criminal. WE KNEW WE ARE BETTER THAN THAT, and we didn't need it. (We don't think we'll do Craig's List again!)
Did we really need to make that extra money? We did! We also had in mind some things we would really like to buy. But we decided that this was not much different than when we gave away the food or the clothes we had bought but were not going to use. We decided to put some items out on the curb with a sign "Free Stuff" and to put this stuff out a good 6 days before the garbage pick up and out of the way of the lawn sprinklers.
We are not joking when we tell you that WITHIN AN HOUR OF PUTTING ALL THIS STUFF OUT IT WAS GONE. Now we figured, maybe one person with a car or truck took it ALL rather than share and maybe they are going to sell it on Craig's List, a garage sale, or maybe e-Bay. Maybe not.
Well, we are not joking when we tell you that some of our neighbors began to do the same thing!
Two of then are moving to another state for employment and left what they could not pack into U-Hauls or Containers. Other people put out boxes of books and misc. It was neighborly and it was sharing, even if we don't all know each other.
And guess what! Two of the items that we had on our wish list to buy were out there on the curb for us to take.
OK, is that INSTANT ECONOMIC KARMA or what?!
We are saying that if we had bought these items new we would be out about $400.
And that is $400 we are SAVING!

Heard on the radio this morning, and wanted to research a bit. We rarely buy in Wallmart, though it is the nations largest retailer. Last purchase, some yarn that had the Made in the USA flag on it.

COLUMBUS DAY : KIDS FUN!
Some children will have the day off, others will go to school, but Columbus Day, a traditional holiday in the United States of America is something special to celebrate.
In recent years there has been a lot of talk about Columbus and whether or not he was actually first to discover the American Continent or not. As part of your classroom or home schooling celebration you can certainly include alternative stories. WHAT WE WANT TO FOCUS ON HERE IS THE SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE and DISCOVERY!
For Columbus did not create the United States of America, and he didn't venture very far from where he landed, nor did he have the kind of ships we have today, far from it. WHAT WE WANT TO FOCUS ON HERE IS THE WAY PEOPLE HAVE MANAGED TO DEAL WITH HARDSHIPS AND OBSTACLES!
Your celebration can include ART, HISTORY, or many other subjects.
You can write and perform original plays, poems, or songs.
USE YOUR IMAGINATION!

WE'RE GETTING READY FOR OUR FOURTH OF JULY PICNIC !
We're almost ready for our Fourth of July Picnic. All we have to do is buy the food. On the menu, corn of course, along with the usual - burgers, chicken, hotdogs... pickles, relish, mustard, ketchup, mayo, and some home made potato salad with onions and bell peppers, cut small.
We also plan to run a couple movies on DVD borrowed from our public library and play some patriotic music, before we watch the fireworks, which luckily we can see without having to travel to a fairgrounds or football stadium to watch...
We challenge you to have a Fourth of July Picnic, where the tablecloth, the plastic utencils, paper plates, and decorations are all MADE IN THE USA!

MANY OF YOU HAVE LOST YOUR HOMES AND APARTMENTS!
We haven't given up on blogging or purchasing as much as we can that is made in the USA so that we can support jobs and the economy. President Obama inherited this mess and he is probably not going to be able to help us get out of the terrible economic situation we are living.
BUT IT IS UP TO US! It always was!
We can still help to turn it around!
So many of you have lost your apartments or homes. We know. A while back we called our closest church to ask if any parishioners needed someone to live in, in exchange for rent, for a friend of ours who was in desperate need of a roof over her head.
The area is considered well to do, there are many home owners, many senior citizens who bought those houses for a tenth or less than they would be sold for now, people who have maids.
This is what the church secretary said to us : "So many of our parishioners have lost homes, so many are taking in family, we just don't have anyone that needs to take strangers in."
Patriots can love their country and still have criticism.
We have to face that we have problems first before we can start solving them.
We can look at the negative and the positive. We can still believe without being in denial!

JOE LOUIS PATRIOTIC POSTER
It's not that we're hawks. We believe in a strong DEFENSE. We believe in keeping our own country strong. To do that we have to have and keep PROSPERITY. We have to take care of our own first, before we can afford to be generous to other countries and their people! How easy it is for them to make us feel Guilty.
But we are still waiting for paybacks.
And no matter who the President is it's lousy financial policy to let those Countries default on us!

We were listening to a radio show in the middle of the night recently, and presented was a startling fact 43 million Americans are now using FOOD STAMPS (that means they are eligible) and one person in 6 may not have enough to eat!
THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IS SUPPOSED TO BE THE BREAD BASKET OF THE WORLD!

HAPPY NEW YEAR PATRIOTIC PURCHASERS! KEEP BUYING AMERICAN!
What can we expect in 2011 as Americans who are experiencing a DEPRESSION in the economy which has resulted in record foreclosures of HOMES resulting in record breaking HOMELESS, defaults on STUDENT LOANS, joblessness, A REDUCTION OF SALARIES and BROKEN UNIONS, and you know the rest?
WE KNOW HOW BAD IT IS! And we often feel powerless. BUT THERE IS ONE WAY TO GO and that is UP. And there is a way that you can make an IMPACT even when you don't have much income yourself!
In this era of INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS you can STILL make every attempt to BUY AMERICAN! Doing so preserves jobs, not just in MANUFACTURING, but in TRUCKING, and in RETAIL and WHOLESALE SALES, which leads to REAL ESTATE!
EVERY AMERICAN MADE PRODUCT YOU PURCHASE maintains and improves our economy!
